Visual Effects 1
This month I had Visual Effects 1 and we were tasked to make some pretty awesome effects in Maya 2015. My first project was a Rube Goldberg Machine. We had to practice making rigid hard bodies and passive hard bodies. Along with different fields I was able to make the Rube Goldberg machine work. I then gave the scene some colors and also practiced lighting the bulbs by making the texture glow instead of using a light.
Quick History lesson
For those of you who don’t know, Rube Goldberg was the guy who invented the machines that you already know about. They are the machines where one thing triggers the next and then that thing triggers the next and so on. You probably just didn’t know that was the name of them. Reason everyone knows about them is because he was a cartoonist that drew these wild machines that we have all seen in cartoons and now in modern days people build them, but fun fact, that most people do not know is, he never made one himself.
Rube Goldberg (1883-1970) was a Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist, sculptor and author. Reuben Lucius Goldberg (Rube Goldberg) was born in San Francisco on July 4, 1883. After graduating from the University of California Berkeley with a degree in engineering, Rube went on to work as an engineer for the City of San Francisco Water and Sewers Department.

Here is my Pre-Pro Storyboard with my plan of what I was going to use and how I was going to do it. The fun thing about this class was they made us do our story board and plan before we even knew what we were capable of doing. My guess is so we didn’t feel limited to what we knew how to do and it would challenge us to try to learn how to do what we wanted.

Rube Goldberg Machine – Lesson 1 – Rigid Body Dynamics
Our second project was a Foundry scene that was given to us and we had to create particles for Smoke, Fire, and Liquid. We had full control of what the scene would look like. We used all kinds of particles to create certain looks. Lots and Lots and Lots of setting tweaks to try to pull off certain particles. My original plan was slightly different then the final project, but sometimes that happens. My original plan was to do Steam, Smoke, Fire, and Sparks. But I changed it up by getting rid of the steam since it was so close to smoke and changing the sparks to liquid to keep the scene short for rendering purposes.

The Foundry – Lesson 2 – Particle Effects
Here is my final video of Lesson 2. I am very happy with the way it turned out considering some of the challenges I ran into on this project. Of course I see some of the errors and things that I wish I would have had time to change. Please watch in HD for best results.
Our third and final project was a super fun one for me. We had to practice creating soft bodies. The first thing that came to mind when the professor was presenting our final project was Jello! Who doesn’t love watching Jello Jiggle? So I did some research and found a video on-line of Jello being dropped at high-speed to give it a slow motion effect. I wanted to try to recreate that look of Jello falling and rippling in slow motion. But how was I going to do it? After many different methods I found one that really gave it a very nice ripple effect. The first few tests made it very stiff and cartoony. Once I found out how to make the Jello look real, then it came to color and trying to get a good look of the surface. I used a MIA X Material and set it to a solid glass, but then tweaked the settings for hours. Below is a few test renders once I got close to what I liked.
My original plan was to try to replicate the video as close as possible with about 12 pieces of Jello all interacting with one another. Once I got to two pieces of Jello I started running into issues where each piece I added after would change the dynamics of the first two pieces of Jello. I knew that rendering was going to take a VERY long time as I wanted to render in the highest quality of mental ray for this final project so I decided to just work with two pieces but make them look the best as possible. With 600 frames it took over 40 hours of render time to produce the quality I was looking for and the final video shows it!

Jello Simulation – Lesson 3 – Soft Body Simulation
Here is my final video for Lesson 3 and I am so happy with the way it turned out! Please be sure to watch this in HD so you can see the full quality that I put into it. I mean after 40 hours of rendering at least take a minute to watch it in all its glory. I also found a commercial for Jello from the 1970’s and thought it was perfect for this video. Got my final grades for Art History, yep you guessed it, another A+! I really enjoyed this class and this was an example of wishing we had a little more time to focus on learning about the past great artists. It felt like we were a shell skipping across the water just barely scratching the surface. Each skip representing a different time period of art. I defiantly plan on doing my own research and continuing to go to museums and get inspiration from other artists. Other then the 77% I got in this class I am very happy with my grades and still proud of myself for rocking that 4.0 GPA!
Steve Jobs, An American Icon
Today in Art History we got to create again! I am so happy I am getting to use my art skills to create things instead of just studying and remembering things or writing papers. I am very proud of this. I had to follow the rules of what we were doing and submit that but then I came home and worked on it a little more to make it more the way I wanted it to look. Its not much different then the assignment just some extras added to it to make it mine.
Art History has been a very fun class so far. We have crammed 35,000 years of art into 4 weeks! I know sounds it impossible and it really is, but I have loved every day of class. We get to look at all different forms of art that are considered very important from Prehistoric to modern art. Some I completely enjoy and some I look at and say “WHY?” We started off with Prehistoric cave drawings and my teacher recommended this really cool Documentary on Netflix called Cave of Forgotten Dreams which is this awesome movie about these French explorers that found the oldest known artwork in history and they found it in 1995 in the south of France. Worth watching as it is very interesting. We then moved through the ages stopping at the Egyptian, Mediaeval, Renaissance, and Bourque time periods. All these time periods had some very interesting works. It’s not until we get into the modern art time period when I start to question what “art” really is. for example:
Marcel Duchamp “Fountain”
This is considered “Art” and is displayed in many different museums. So basically this artist in 1917 decided to be avant-garde or just a Smart-A$$ (not sure which) and submitted this Urinal to the Society of Independent Artists but was rejected, yet this piece has since become considered a work of art. All he did was sign his name to it, so if you are looking at it, like I did, wondering where the “Art” aspect of it is, stop looking!
Then we did get to my favorite artist…
Growing up in St. Petersburg, FL my whole life I was blessed to have the Salvador Dalí Museum right in downtown St. Pete and have visited many times. He was a Surrealist painter who had such a crazy yet amazing mind. Every time I do research on him I learn something new about him or find a piece he did that I hadn’t seen before. Nothing beats going to his museum in person and seeing his most famous pieces right in front of you. I could spend hours there staring at each piece and finding something new each time to study.
These are just a few of his pieces that I find interesting.
We did get to do a field trip this month in Art History class. We got to go to the Orlando Museum of Art
I had a great time here and we even got to do a scavenger hunt for the museum. They gave us a sheet with clues on it and we had to find 14 different art pieces based on the clues and write down the name of the piece and the artist. I enjoyed seeing all different genres of art that was on display but we had to pick out our favorite and write a paper about the artist. I had a strong liking to a Japanese artist named Honda Syoryu who does basket weaving art. I know that sounds a little boring, but take a look at these. Very amazing!
One of the best parts of the Art History class is we have finally gotten into using our PhotoShop and making some art. Now I understand most people haven’t used PhotoShop, but I have been self-taught so I was a little past most of the students in class and they had to have us do very simple projects to get used to it. I spent most of my time just helping the students seated around me making sure they knew where things were and were on the same page as everyone else. The first was our cave painting. We had to simulate a cave painting using PhotoShop to give the impression of it being a painting that was found and here is mine.
I choose to draw a Rhino for many different reasons. One as you may or may not know the Rhino is one of my favorite animals. Second I was surprised to find out that the prehistoric man drew rhinos in the caves in southern France. So this was my simple Rhino cave drawing I did.
Then we got to do a Tiled Mosaic painting from an image we found online. You guessed it… I did a Rhino again!
So I know this has been a lot and I will try to keep you updated on a more regular basis so there isn’t a ton of stuff to tell you, but things get pretty crazy around Full Sail. I am already looking forward to my next class 3D Fundamentals of Art 1 which I really hope is when I get my Wacom Tablet for drawing. Thanks for reading about my past few weeks.
